Russian-language emigre (tamizdat) first, and the census claim is confirmed: the true first is Munich 1963, from Tovarishchestvo zarubezhnykh pisatelei (Association of Foreign Writers), printed abroad without Akhmatova's consent while she was still living in the USSR. There is no competing Soviet book edition to weigh — the cycle was not published in full in the USSR until 1987, and even then first in periodicals (Oktyabr' no. 3; Neva no. 6), not as a book. Collectors treat only the Munich 1963 imprint as the true first; the 1987 Soviet appearances and all English translations are first thus.
