Donating books in Albuquerque is free at every legitimate channel. There is no cost to drop books off at Goodwill of New Mexico, Savers, Friends of the Albuquerque Public Library, or NMLP. There is no cost for NMLP's free in-home pickup either — no per-box charge, no mileage fee, no tip expected.
What does differ between channels is what you give up in exchange:
- Goodwill, Savers (via partner nonprofit), Friends of APL — free drop-off, written tax receipt, but you transport, and store staff decide at intake what they keep.
- NMLP — free drop-off OR free pickup, no transportation, no pre-sorting, any condition accepted, but no tax receipt because the operating entity is for-profit (a written acknowledgment is available on request).
The honest tradeoff: convenience and condition tolerance, in exchange for the tax receipt. Donors who specifically need the deduction route to a 501(c)(3) (Goodwill, Friends of APL). Donors who specifically need the books gone with minimum effort route to NMLP.
