Paul Horgan was one of the most decorated men of letters the Southwest ever produced, a two-time Pulitzer winner whose Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History remains a landmark of regional writing. Long associated with New Mexico and the borderlands, Horgan moved fluently between history, fiction, and the essay. Approaches to Writing collects his reflections on the writer's craft, paired with a provisional bibliography of his work by James Kraft, and stands as a generous, hard-won meditation from a master at the height of his powers.

This is the first printing of 1973, issued by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and it carries a warm holograph inscription from Horgan on the front free endpaper, signed in his own hand to a named recipient. An author's signed presentation copy of a book about the very act of writing is a quietly special thing, joining the words on the page to the hand that made them. The green cloth binding and gilt-lettered spine round out a genuine, documentable association copy.
