Following the Sun and Moon: Hopi Kachina Tradition is distinctive because it presents the Hopi katsina ceremonies from a Hopi point of view. Author Alph H. Secakuku, a Hopi of Second Mesa in northern Arizona, walks the reader through the ceremonial year, explaining the individual ceremonies and the role of katsina spirits and dolls within a tradition that has remained closely guarded, with most published accounts historically coming from non-Hopi sources. The book draws on roughly two hundred kachina dolls from the Heard Museum collection.
Produced in cooperation with the Heard Museum and published by Northland Publishing, this is a first impression from 1995, with landscape photography by Owen Seumptewa and object photography by Craig Smith. As an insider's sensitive account, dedicated to the Hopi people, it occupies a special and respectful place among books on katsina tradition.
