The Rugs of Teec Nos Pos: Jewels of the Navajo Loom, by Ruth K. Belikove, is a focused study of one of the most intricate and dazzling of all Navajo weaving styles. Originating near the trading post at Teec Nos Pos in the far northeastern corner of the Navajo Nation, these rugs are famous for their dense, outlined geometric patterns and richly bordered fields, sometimes likened to Oriental carpets in their complexity. Belikove's catalog, with its curator's and author's prefaces, accompanied an exhibition of these textiles.
Published in 1994 by the Adobe Gallery, a Santa Fe institution devoted to the art of the Southwest Indian, this is a first edition. The copy carries a small Heard Museum Shop label, a quiet trace of its provenance through one of the country's premier museums of Native American art. For students of Navajo textiles, this remains a useful and well-illustrated reference to a distinctive regional weaving tradition.
