Book Donation Bins in Albuquerque

The honest answer first: read the label on a parking-lot bin before you load books into it.

Short answer: the 24/7 book drop box on Edith Blvd

If you want a bin that is built for books, use my covered drop box outside the gate at 5445 Edith Blvd NE in the North Valley. It stands outside the gate, near the road, and it is open every hour of every day with no appointment.

What goes in
Books and media in any condition — textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, VHS — plus clean, wearable clothing. Bag or box it; no sorting.
How it works
Pull up outside the gate and load straight into the chute. The box is waterproof, so rain stays off your donation. I open every load by hand.
When to come
Any time for the box. For a big load, or if the box is full, come 8 a.m.–3 p.m. any day, when someone helps you unload — or text 505-250-3804.

If you searched “book donation bin near me,” you were probably picturing the metal bins outside grocery stores and gas stations. Most of those are labeled for clothing and shoes. If the label doesn’t list books, don’t put books in it — paper is the wrong fit for a textile bin, and a bin that is full or wrong for books is no reason to leave boxes on the ground beside it.

The covered book drop box in the North Valley

Albuquerque does have an around-the-clock drop built for books first: the NMLP 24/7 drop box outside the gate at 5445 Edith Blvd NE (North Valley, near Edith & Montano). The box is covered and waterproof and stands outside the gate, near the road. No lock, no appointment, no condition rules for books and media — and unlike any textile bin, it takes the whole shelf: books, textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks, VHS, and cameras of every era. Clean, wearable clothing is welcome in it too. Box full, or too much for it? Text 505-250-3804, or come between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. — someone is at the warehouse every day in that window to help you unload.

What happens next is the real difference. One person — me — opens every load by hand and checks every title against the first-edition reference before it’s resold, rehomed, or recycled as paper. No book goes to the landfill, and donations are not tax-deductible because this is a locally owned for-profit — the straight answer, as always.

Other Albuquerque places that take books

Two other options with published rules, as each one states them on its own site (checked September 28, 2026):

Encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, and worn copies are exactly what my box is for. Got more than a carload? Bulk book removal is free across the metro, and a whole house of books is an estate cleanout.

No car, no problem

Free pickup covers the whole Albuquerque metro — one box or a garage. And from anywhere in the United States, the mail works: donate books by mail via cheap USPS Media Mail, donor-paid, any condition.

Bin questions, answered honestly

Are the parking-lot donation bins in Albuquerque for books?
Mostly not. The metal bins outside grocery stores and gas stations are usually labeled for clothing and shoes. Go by the label on the bin: if it doesn’t list books, it isn’t the place for them. A covered drop built for books is the safer bet.
What happens to books left beside a donation bin?
Rain, sprinklers, and parking-lot grime, usually. Books left outside a bin are unprotected the moment you drive away, and a wet box is a recycling box no matter how good the titles were. If a bin is full or excludes books, don’t leave them on the ground next to it.
Is there an actual 24/7 book donation bin in Albuquerque?
Yes. The NMLP drop box at 5445 Edith Blvd NE (North Valley) is a covered, waterproof books-and-media drop that never closes. It sits outside the gate, near the road, with no lock and no appointment, and books and media are welcome in any condition. It takes what clothing bins won’t — encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, cassettes, even cameras — and clean, wearable clothing can go in the same box. If the box is full or your load is too big, text 505-250-3804, or come between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., when someone at the warehouse can take it in.
Does the Albuquerque library take book donations?
Yes, with limits. The Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillo County says on its donations page that it accepts books and audiovisual materials in good condition, but not books with mold, handwriting or highlighting, magazines, Reader’s Digest condensed books, encyclopedias, or textbooks. Those can all go in my drop box instead.
What if the drop box is full?
Keep the load in your car and text 505-250-3804, or come back between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. any day, when someone at the warehouse can take it in. Please don’t stack boxes beside the box or leave them at the gate.
Do donation bins pay for books?
Donation bins don’t pay, and neither do I — NMLP never buys books. What you get instead is care: one person opens every donation by hand and checks every title before it’s resold, rehomed, or recycled as paper. No book goes to the landfill.
What if I can't drive to a bin at all?
Two options: free pickup anywhere in the Albuquerque metro (call or text 505-250-3804), or — from anywhere in the United States — mail books to NMLP’s receiving address via cheap USPS Media Mail. See the donate-books-by-mail page for the address and how-to.
